BRODE, Carl & Elizabeth (McGee)

.An inquest into the deaths of a former Midlothian couple who were drowned last Friday night in the Monongahela river near Morgantown, W. Va., when their car plunged from the rear of a ferry, will be held next week, according to Coroner J. B. Riffle, of Monongalia county.  The man and wife were Carl and Elizabeth Brode, residents of Star City, W. Va., after moving from Midlothian.  They met their deaths, according to Coroner Rifle, in one of the most unusual accidents ever recorded in Monangalia county.  Mr. and Mrs. Brode were dragged aross the Monongahela River in a car which had the front wheels on the back apron of the ferry, and were drowned when the landing of the ferry on the Star City side of the river caused the car to fall off the ferry into the river about 25 feet from shore.  Two passengers in the Brode car escaped drowning.  Douglas Pritt of Star City leaped from the car when the ferry started across, while his wife, Mrs. Pritt, was rescued from the water after the car had fallen from the ferry.  Riffle said Pritt told him he jumped from the car to try to attract the attention of the ferry operator.  Two other cars were on the ferry.  The drivers of those two cars grabbed hold of the front bumper of the Brode machine.  Riffle said these two men called to Mr. and Mrs. Brode and Mrs. Pritt to get out of the car and climb over the fenders to the ferry. For some unexplained reason, they failed to heed to the advice.  When the ferry landed on the Star City side of the river, the men were unable to hold the Brode car which swung off the apron into the river.  Mrs. Brode was the former Elizabeth McGee of Lonaconing.  In addition to three children, she is survived by brothers Harry McGee of Hindebrand and Dave McGee of Riverscam; four sisters, Mrs. J. I. Kelly of Fairmont; Mrs. Carl Fisher of Morgantown; Mrs. Walter Sloey of Kent, Ohio; and Mrs. Mary Dawson of Detroit, Mich.
