Wm. Buchholtz Dies Xmas Day ~ Prominent Auto Dealer Expires in Memorial Hospital At Age of 47
William Henry Buchholtz, for many years one of the best-known and popular automobile dealers in the city, died at 8:20 o'clock Friday morning in Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since December 18. Mr. Buchholtz was a member of a family prominent in Cumberland for generations and was formerly president of the Automobile Dealers' Association of Cumberland. He was also president of the Fidelity Finance Corporation and head of the Buchholtz Motor Company, 40 N. Mechanic Street. Only 47 years of age at the time of his death, his serious illness was not generally known, and coming as it did on Christmas Day, his death cast a pall over the holiday for his wide circle of social and business friends. Mr. Buchholtz was a member of Cumberland Council No. 586 Knights of Columbus, Cumberland Lodge No 63, B.P.O.Elks, and formerly a member of the Cumberland Country Club and the Cumberland Kiwanis Club. Mr. Buchholtz was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth C. Buchholtz and the late William A. Buchholtz. Surviving besides his mother, are his widow, Mrs. Maude Rolling[sic] Buchholtz; two sons, John Marshall Buchholtz, and William H. Buchholtz, Jr.; one daughter, Ann Catherine Buchholtz; two brothers, Vincent A., and Paul J. Buchholtz; two issters[sic], Miss Mary Josephine Buchholtz and Mrs. Allan T. Lakin, all of Cumberland. BUCKALEW, Britt B.
FROSTBURG—Britt B. Buckalew, 55, of Vale Summit, died early today on his way to work at the Consolidated Fuel Company Mine 10. Deputy County Medical Examiner Dr. H. V. Deming said death was caused by a heart attack. He was a coal miner for 30 years and was a son of Mrs. Emma Buckalew and the late John Buckalew, Cumberland. Survivors, besides his mother, include his widow, Mrs. Mary (Hansel) Buckalew; two sons, Phillip Buckalew, of here, and Oliver Buckalew, Vale Summit; and four daughters, Mrs. Robert MacMillan, Midland; Mrs. Robert Layman, Edinburg, Va.; Mrs. Arthur Tighe, Midland, and Miss Colleen Buckalew, at home. BUCKEL, Elbert E.
Former Garrett County Del[agate]. Elbert E. Buckel, 61, of Bittinger, died yesterday in Veterans Hospital, Washington, D.C., after a lingering illness. Mr. Buckel was a farmer and operator of a peat moss business. He served in the House of Delegates from 1958 to 1962. A veteran of World War II, he was a past commander of Grantsville Post 214, American Legion. He belonged to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Bittinger; was a member of the Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department, and belonged to the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Bittinger. Mr. Buckel was a member of Camp 68, Woodmen of the World, Bittinger, and was an escort of the jurisdictional office of the State of Maryland, Woodmen of the World. He was born at Bittinger, a son of the late Oliver and Ruth (Shoup) Buckel. He is survived by four brothers, Herbert, Ralph and Joseph Buckel, all of Bittinger, and Kenneth Buckel, Grantsville. The body is at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where friends will be received tomorrow and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to9 p.m. and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at Marantha Assembly of God Church where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. by Rev. BUCKEL, Oliver
Mr. Buckel was born at Bittinger, a son of the late Joseph and Alice (Bittinger) Buckel. He was an active member of Bittinger Lutheran Church and belonged to Camp of Bittinger, Woodmen of the World, a number of years. He served as clerk and financial secretary of the camp. Mr. Buckel had been seriously ill the past three months. He was a patient at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, several weeks. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Ruth Shoup; six sons, Herbert, Joseph. BITTINGER — Rex C. Buckel, 59, died Thursday at Sacred Heart Hospital. A native of here, he was a son of Mrs. Ruth (Shoup) Buckel and the late Oliver Buckel. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and WOW Camp 68. Besides his mother, he is survived by his widow, Etta (Brenneman) Buckel; a son, Joseph W. BUGOSH, Paul, Sr.
FROSTBURG - Paul Bugosh, Sr., 74, of Klondyke, died yesterday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, where he had been a patient several weeks. Mr. Bugosh was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was the husband of the late Anna (Bugosh) Bugosh. He was a retired coal miner and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland. He was a member of the United Mine Workers. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Baker, Jr. and Mrs. Lee Piper, both of Klondyke, and Mrs. Paul W. MEYERSDALE — Mrs. Elsie N. Bungard, 86, of here, died yesterday at her residence. Born March 13, 1890 in Deal, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Augustus and Nancy (Wilhelm) Barmoy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Bungard. She is survived by four sons, James Bungard and Robert Bungard, both of Warren, Ohio; and William Bungard and Verl Bungard, both or here; a brother, Albert Bungard, here; a sister, Mrs. Ella Engle, Poway, Calif.; six grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. BURDOCK, Alexander
The body of Alexander Burdock, 69, Thomas, W. Va., father of William E. Burdock, this city, was found yesterday in the Thomas Dam reservoir. D. E. Cuppett, prosecuting attorney for Tucker County, said there was no evidence of foul play. The victim's cap and sweater were found along the shore. Mr. Burdock was said to have had silicosis, a respiratory disease suffered by miners. No coroner inquest was necessary, Cuppett added. He was last reported seen about 3 p. m. Sunday and neighbors began a search for him. Investigating for the West Virginia State Police was Trooper G. H. Phillips of the Thomas detachment. Born May 4, 1883 in Frostburg, Mr. Burdock was a son of the late George and Agnes (Morris) Burdock. He had resided in Thomas since 1910. Frostburg, August 21 - Joseph Burdock, 66, a farmer of near Finzel, died this morning at Miners' Hospital where he was admitted yesterday. He had been ill for two months. WESTERNPORT — Elwood Burke, 74, of 211 Rock Street, died Saturday night in the Clarksburg VA Hospital, where he was admitted after suffering a fractured hip in a fall. He was a veteran of World War I and II and was a member of Victory Post 155, American Legion, here. Mr. Burke was a native of Meyersdale, a son of the late John and Alice Heider Burke. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mae Warnick Burke; two sons, W. She married Kenneth Burkett, who survives, in 1940. His wife, the former Alice Fike, preceded him in death. Bruce W. Burkholder, 54, of Garrett, R. D. 1, died in Meyersdale Community Hospital. He was born Oct. 11, 1908, at Garrett, R. D. 1, a son of the late Urias and Annie Shumaker Burkholder. MEYERSDALE — Harry P. Burkholder, 81, of RD 3, Meyersdale, died yesterday at Meyersdale Community Hospital. Born June 12, 1891 in Garrett, he was the son of the late Nelson and Mary (Engle) Burkholder. A well-known surveyor, he was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion and the VFW and the Lutheran Church Council. Surviving are his widow, Mae E. BURKHOLDER, Mark S.
A 36-year-old Meyersdale, Pa., area man, was killed yesterday when his car went out of control and struck a telephone pole, on Broadway in Meyersdale. He was Mark S. Burkholder, 36, of RD 3, Meyersdale, who died instantly in the accident which occurred at 5 p.m., according to Robert H. Halverson, coroner for Somerset County, Pa. A native of Meyersdale, he was a son of Harry P. and Mae (Kretchman) Burkholder, who survive. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Donald Grew, RD Somerset, and Mrs. Alfred Baer, Meyersdale. Mr. Burkholder was an employe of the White Warehouse in Somerset. The body is at the Price Funeral Home in Meyersdale where friends will be received after 7 p.m. today. A service will be conducted there Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. Stephen McKittrick will officiate and burial will be in Somerset County Memorial Park. BURKHOLDER, Vivian Joan
Vivian Joan Burkholder, 19, of 1405 Hawthorne St., Poplar Grove, died at 2:10 a.m. today in Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh where she had been a patient for the past six weeks. She was born in Connellsville May 25, 1937, a daughter of Daniel M. and Kathryn Miner Burkholder. She attended elementary school at Mill Run in Springfield Township where she resided until two years ago, and was graduated from Connellsville Joint High School with the Class of 1955. She was employed as a secretary by Alderman J. W. Prinkey and was a member of the Mill Run E.U.B. Church. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lewis, (Helen) Ohler of Connellsville and Mrs. Ray (Mildred) Herbert of East Connellsville. Tilden Jacob Burns, 80, of 101 East Laing Avenue, died last night at Memorial Hospital. He was born in Frederick and was a son of the late Jacob and Mary (Gover) Burns. He was a retired B & O employe and was a member of local 212, Fraternal International Association of Machinists. He is survived by five brothers, Harvey, William, Harry, Calvin, and Homer Burns, all of this city; and three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Kenney, and Mrs. Earl Foreback, this city; and Mrs. Virgie Wartikoff, Detroit, Mich. Raymond P. Burrall, 77 of 716 Golden Lane, died yesterday in Newton D. Baker VA Center, Martinsburg. He had been residing with Theodore Day. Born in Cumberland, Mr. Burrall was a son of the late George W. and Katie (Ferrell) Burrall. He was a former employee of the B&O Railroad and was a veteran of World War I. Charles W. Bush, 52, of 4509 Mainfield Avenue, Baltimore, died today in University Hospital there. Born in Rockwood, Pa., he formerly resided in Bloomington, Md. He moved to Baltimore 10 years ago. He was a son of Elmer and Mae (Baer) Bush, of Bloomington. Mr. Bush was a member of Meyersdale Lutheran Church. Besides his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Pattison, Baltimore, and Mrs. Shirley Mae Shears, Westernport; a son, Charles R. Bush, Piedmont, and seven grandchildren. BUTLER, Abram Melvin
An elderly Grantsville man perished and his daughter was critically burned in an early morning blaze at their farmhouse. Maryland State Police identified the victim as Abram Melvin Butler, 81, of Star Route, Grantsville. His daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Brown, 53, was burned in a futile attempt to save her father's life as the flames swept their two-story frame house at 2:30 a. m. today. Mrs. Brown was admitted to Sacred Heart Hospital where she was reported in serious condition at noon with third degree burns over 60 to 75 percent of her body. Cpl Lloyd Dunton of the Maryland State Police said Mrs. Brown had been living with her father, a retired farmer who has been crippled for 18 years. Recently he had been incapacitated. Cpl. Dunton said Mrs. Brown had been asleep in a second floor bedroom and was aroused by the fire which started in the kitchen. . . Services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Newman Funeral Home by Rev. David Fetter. Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery. Mr. Butler was born in Grantsville and was a son of the late Henry and Mary (Mort) Butler. He was a member of the Grantsville Christ Lutheran Church. His wife, Minta (Durst) Butler, preceded him in death. Surviving are seven sons, Lloyd Butler, Cumberland; Robert Butler, Frostburg; Harold Butler, Grantsville; Arthur and Fay Butler, both of Baltimore; Ray Butler, Meyersdale, Pa., and Claude Butler, Shawnee, Okla.; five daughters, Mrs. Beula Merrbach, RD, Salisbury, I Pa-; Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Fern Fitzpatrick and Mrs. John Resh, all of Grantsville, and Mrs. Florence Thorp, Frostburg. Mrs. Eliza Folk Butler, 77, widow of Gideon McCleland Butler, died at her home near Grantsville, April 5. Funeral services were held at Oak Grove Mennonite church Sunday afternoon with the Rev. M. B. Miller, and the Rev. Ross Speicher officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Butler was the daughter of the late Jonas J. and Susanna Shultz Folk, and was born near Jennings, July 19, 1868. Surviving children are Jonas Butler. Meyersdale, Pa., Sept. 1 — Thomas Gilbert Butler, 78, died Monday night at the home of his father-in-law, Lewis Knepp of Sand Patch, R. D. He was a son of Edward and Minerva (Tuttle) Butler and was born in Elmira, N. Y. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sarah (Knepp) Butler, and a son, Lewis Butler, of Carmichaels, Pa. Mr. Butler came to Meyersdale when the Western Maryland Railroad was being constructed in this section and worked for that company until his retirement. He was a member of the Owls Lodge.
