CISSEL, Joseph Clark

Joseph Clark Cissel, 52, of Silver Spring, former state's attorney Montgomery county (Maryland) and prominent in Maryland National Guard activities for about 30 years, died this morning in the Bethesda Medical Center where he was admitted July 3. Mr. Cissel was born at Colesville, Md., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Cissel; and lived in Montgomery county all of his life. In recent years he resided at 8804 Second Avenue, Silver Spring. At the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted in the National Guard in Company K and served in France as a lieutenant. Returning to civilian life, he resumed his studies at the Georgetown University Law School and was elected state's attorney of Montgomery county a few years following his graduation. Mr. Cissel organized the Service Company of the National Guard at Silver Spring in 1920 and served as its commander until 1938 when he resigned due to the press of business. When Maryland Guardsmen were reactivated in 1940 he re-enlisted in his old company as a private, but later was assigned to officers' school at Fort Benning and after being transferred to the 33rd Division saw service in the South Pacific to be discharged with the rank of major. Mr. Cissel was well known and active in Democratic political circles in Western Maryland and also prominent in affairs of the 29th Division Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, being a charter member of the VFW at Silver Spring and one of the founders of Cissel-Saxton American Legion Post. He served as vice president of the Silver Spring Building and Supply Company from 1943 until several weeks ago when he was elected secretary-treasurer. Mr. Cissel is survived by his wife, the former Leona (Yarnall) Speelman, formerly of Cumberland, and three children by his former wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Cissel, Silver Spring. They are Mrs. Elizabeth Kelley, Maxwell Field, Alabama, and Mrs. Margaret Sundermann and John C. Cissel, both of Silver Spring. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Lawrence Speelman and Ann Speelman, both of Silver Spring, and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

CLAPPER, Carl R.

MEYERSDALE - Carl R. Clapper, 79, of RD 3, died yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born in Ellerslie, Md., he was a son of the late Rev. Daniel and Rachel (Hoover) Clapper. Mr. Clapper organized the Meyersdale Concrete Products Works, now Clappers' Building Materials Company, in 1925. The oldest charter member of the Meyersdale Lions Club, he was a former member of the board of directors of Meyersdale Community Hospital, Union Cemetery Association, and Second National Bank and a member of the Meyersdale School Board. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his widow, Margaret (Saylor) Clapper; two sons, Robert and Dale Clapper, RD 3; a daughter, Mrs. Marie Cole, New Castle, Del.; a sister, Mrs. Nannie Tressler, RD 3; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Price Funeral Home. A service will be conducted there Friday at 2 p.m., with Rev. John Click officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren.

CLAPPER, Rev. Daniel K.

MEYERSDALE, Jan 18 — Rev. Daniel K. Clapper died Sunday at his home near Meyersdale following a few days' illness of acute indigestion. Few knew of his illness. Rev. Clapper came to Meyersdale some years ago and served the Church of the Brethren as pastor for several years. At the time of his death he was pastor of the congregation at Garrett and Beachdale. He was born in Bedford county and prior to his coming to Meyersdale, he resided in Ellerslie, Md., and before entering into the ministry he was employed on the Pennsylvania Railroad in the capacity of conductor and worked from Ellerslie to Altoona. Besides his widow, he is survived by the following children: Jesse Clapper, Mrs. Hurley Fike, Irwen Clapper, Mrs. Rufus Tressler, Carl Clapper and Daniel Clapper, all living in Meyersdale. The funeral will likely be Wednesday afternoon at the Church of the Brethren.

CLAPPER,  J. Irvin

MEYERSDALE - J. Irvin Clapper, 66, of Meyersdale, died suddenly Saturday at his home. Born June 8, 1892 in Ellerslie, he was a son of the late Rev. D. K. and Rachel (Hoover) Clapper. He had worked in the mines for over 25 years and was a veteran of World War I. He belonged to the Charles E. Kelly Post 112, American Legion, Meyersdale, and was a member of the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren. Mr. Clapper is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary (Campbell) Clapper; a sister, Mrs. Nannie Tressler, RD 3, Meyersdale; and two brothers, Carl R. and Daniel Clapper, both of RD 3, Meyersdale. Price Funeral Home; interment Union Cemetery.

CLAPPER, Mrs. Kathryn Bolden

MEYERSDALE - Mrs. Kathryn Clapper, 69, of RD 3 died yesterday at Meyersdale Community Hospital. Born in Meyersdale she was a daughter of the late Charles Albert and Anna (Hart) Bolden. Surviving are her husband, Daniel G. Clapper; a daughter, Mrs. Fred Phipps, Orlando, Fla.; a son, Daniel Clapper Jr., San Leandro, Calif.; a brother, Fred Bolden, here; five sisters, Mrs. Helen Gress, Mrs. Marcella Stotler, Mrs. Frank B. Thomas Jr., Mrs. Elam Miller, and Miss Anna Bolden, all of here; and six grandchildren. Requiem mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at SS Philip and James Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

CLAPPER, Mrs. Mary S. Campbell

MEYERSDALE, Pa. — Mrs. Mary S. Clapper, 70, of Bethlehem, formerly of Meyersdale, died Saturday at Johnstown Memorial Hospital. Born May 24, 1894, in Scotland, she was a daughter of the late James and Jean (Fergueson) Campbell. Her husband, Irvin Clapper, died in 1959. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Eugene Barnhart, Johnstown, and Mrs. James Tressler, Bethlehem; and one brother, James Campbell, also of Bethlehem. She was a charter member of the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 112 in Meyersdale and a member of the United Church of Christ. The body is at the Price Funeral Home. Interment in Union Cemetery.

CLARK, Mrs. Agnes Mae Burdock

Frostburg, Md., June 9—Mrs. Agnes Mae Clark, 38, wife of John Clark. Finzel Road, Garrett county, died Sunday at Miners' Hospital two hours after admission. Besides her husband, she leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Burdock and the following children: Mrs. William Twigg, Carl, Sylvia, Ralph and Lawrence Clark, all at home; six sisters, Mrs. Walter Eichhorn, Jr., this city; Mrs. Martin LaRue, Mrs. James Clark, Mrs. Thomas McKenzie, Mrs. Floyd Boyer, and Miss Mary Burdock, and a brother, Marshall Burdock, all of Garrett county. She was a member of Johnson Methodist church.

CLARK, Mrs. Dorothy Crowe

MEYERSDALE — Mrs. Dorothy Clark, 62, died yesterday at Meyersdale Community Hospital. Born in Meyersdale, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Catherine (Darrah) Crowe and was the widow of Leo Clark, who died in 1952. Surviving are a brother, Charles A. Crowe, Ontario; three sisters, Mrs. Roland McLaren, Williamsport; Mrs. Charles Saners, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Walter Jones, Somerset. The body will be at the Price Funeral Home.

CLARK, Edward B.

Edward B. Clark, 73, of 508 Columbia Avenue, died last night in Allegany County Infirmary where he had been a patient two months. A native of Cumberland, Mr. Clark was a son of the late Edward and Emma (Rossworm) Clark. He held membership in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was a life member of Aerie 245, FO Eagles, and Lodge 271, LOO Moose. His wife, Mrs. Mary M. Clark, died September 12, 1952. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Anthony Molinari, city, and Mrs. Robert Boyer, McKees Rocks, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Reissig and Miss Mazie A. Clark, city; two brothers, George Clark, Frostburg, and Raymond Clark, Grand Rapids, Mich., and six grandchildren. The body is at the Kight Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited tomorrow at 7 p. m. A requiem mass will be recited Wednesday at 9 a. m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church. Interment will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery.

CLARK, Elmer E.

MT. SAVAGE - Elmer E. Clark, 42, died last night in Miners Hospital, Frostburg, where he was admitted August 29. He had been in failing health eight years. Born in Finzel, he was a son of Mrs. Florence (Smallwood) Clark, Mt. Savage, and the late Edward F. Clark. A former employe of the Kelly Springfield Tire Company, he held membership in Kelly Local 26, United Rubber Workers Union, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Surviving, besides his mother, are his widow, Mrs. Mildred (Purbaugh) Clark; a daughter, Margaret A. Clark; two sons, Kenneth and Earl Clark, all at home; four brothers, Joseph Clark, Borden Shaft; Edward Clark, Cumberland; Fred Clark, Frostburg, and Wilbert Clark, Washington, and a sister, Mrs. Harold Youngerman, Frostburg. The body is at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p. m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m.

CLARK, George E.

George E. Clark, aged 68, died at his home at Cooks Mills, Tuesday, May 24. A farmer by occupation, he spent his entire life in that area. He was born in Mann's Choice, June 9, 1880, a son of Isaac J. and Rebecca (Clauson) Clark. He was married to Eleanor Stouffer Sept. 20, 1905. He is survived by his wife, two sons, J. Alan and John I., at home; a daughter, Mrs. Anna Lee Stair; two brothers, James H., Cooks Mills; Perry, Hyndman R.D. 1, and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted at the late residence at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, the Rev. Fred Coone officiating. Interment will be made at Cooks Mills cemetery under the direction of the Zeigler funeral home of Hyndman.

Frostburg, Sept. 12 - James Clark, 53, of Finzel, died last night in Miners Hospital where he was admitted Tuesday after suffering a paralytic stroke. He had been in failing health for two years. A former clay miner, he was a son of the late John and Holley Winebrenner Clark. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Charles Folk, of Frostburg; Mrs. Lemuel McKenzie and the Misses Betty and Shirley Clark, all at home; three sons, James Clark Jr., of Frostburg; and Allen and Paul Clark, at home; and a number of brothers and sisters. The body is at the home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic church at Pocahontas, Pa.

SALISBURG, Pa. — Joseph E. Clark, 89, of Meyersdale, RD 3, died yesterday in Berlin. Born in Larimer Township, he was a son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Lybarger) Clark. His wife, Annie (Werner) Clark, preceded him in death. He was a member of Greenville Lutheran Church. Surviving are five sons, George Clark, Lake Milton, Ohio; Elmer Clark, Pittsburgh; Robert Clark, Carlisle; Earl Clark, RD 3, Meyersdale, and Harry Clark, Lewistown; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Newman, Salisbury; Miss Mae Clark, Belgian Congo and Mrs. Alma Martens, Loysville; a sister, Mrs. Mary Yaist, Meyersdale; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Third Order of St. Francis. She was a former saleslady at Lillian's Girl's Shop. Surviving are a brother, Raymond Clark, Grand Rapids, Mich., and a sister, Mrs. Joseph Reissig, with whom she resided. The body is at the Stein Funeral home. A service will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church and interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The rosary will be recited tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hyndman - Perry Clark, 87, of RD I, died yesterday at Bedford County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient three weeks. Born in Manns Choice, he was a son of the late Isaac and Rebecca (Clauson) Clark. A retired Potomac Edison employe after 22 years of service, he was a member of Redeemers United Church of Christ, Ellerslie. Surviving are his widow, Lonnie Blanche (Hosselrode) Clark; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Snowden and Mrs. Marie Adams, LaVale, Md., and a son, Herman Clark, at home. CLITES,  Albert R.

HYNDMAN - Albert R. Clites, 74, of RD 1, Hyndman, died yesterday at his residence. A lifelong area resident he was a son of the late Daniel and Sarah (Porter) Clites. He was a member of Methodist Chapel of Cook's Mill. A retired Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Rolling Mill employe he was a member of International Brotherhood of Blacksmiths, Drop Forgers and Helpers. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Campbell) Clites; a daughter, Mrs. Alverna Stuckey, Mechanicsburg; a son Willie R. Clites, Elizabeth, N.J., two brothers, William Clites, Corriganville, and Roy Clites, Ellerslie; five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 until 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. A service will be conducted here Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Jesse Earl Clites, 70, Ellerslie, died yesterday at his home. A native of Hyndman, he was a son of the late Wesley and Catherine (Witt) Clites. A retired Western Maryland Railway employe, he was a member of Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America and St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Ellerslie. Surviving are his widow, Lottie May (Hosselrode) Clites; three sons, Leroy E. Clites, Ellerslie; Paul H. Clites, Valley Road, and Jesse E. Clites Jr., Homewood Addition; a daughter, Mrs. Martha M. Kennell, RD 1, Hyndman; a brother, Walter Clites, Grantsville; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Emerick, Fairhope, Pa.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The body is at the Ziegler Funeral Home in Hyndman where friends will be received Fiday from 7 until 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 3 until 9 p.m. A service will be conducted here Sunday at 2 p.m. Rev. CLITES, Jesse E.

A service for Jesse E. Clites Jr., 36, who was found dead Sunday in the cab of a truck in the garage of his residence in Homestead Addition, will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman. Rev. George E. Baughman will officiate and interment will be in Porter Cemetery. A native of Ellerslie, he was a son of Mrs. Lottie (Hosselrode) Clites, RD 1, Hyndman, and the late Jesse Earl Clites, Sr. Employed as a roofer, he was a veteran of the Korean war and was a member of the Order of the Red Men, Cumberland. Besides his mother, he is survived by his widow, Shirley (Piper) Clites; four children, Natalie, Marvin, Robert and Tammy, at home; two brothers, Leroy Clites, Ellerslie, and Paul H. Clites, Valley Road, and a sister, Mrs. Martha M. Kennell, RD 1, Hyndman.

Hyndman - Walter E. Clites, 78, of RD 1 here, died last night in the Fisher and Fazio Nursing Home. Born January 10, 1894 at RD 1, here, he was a son of the late Westley and Katherine (Witt) Clites. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Pearl V. Emerick, Fairhope, Pa. The body is at the Zeigler Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted Sunday at 10:30 a. m. in the funeral home by Rev. FROSTBURG - Alexander Close, 77, died yesterday at his home, 234 Main Street. He was retired and formerly operated the Hershey Confectionery Store, East Main Street. He was a son of the late James and Margaret (Dudley) Close, and was the last surviving member of his family. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie (Brode) Close; two sons, Kenneth L. and William E. Close, both of Frostburg; three daughters, Mrs. William Richardson, Delmar, Md.; Mrs. William Fuller, Frostburg, and Miss Letty Close, at home. The body is at the Hafer Funeral Home where friends will be received today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George L. Wehler officiating. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

Frostburg, Jan. 26 — James D. Close, 67, of 238 East Main street, died this morning in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, where he was admitted Wednesday. Mr. Close was a retired saddle maker and worked many years with Shaffer's General Store here when that business was in operation. A native of Eckhart he resided here since manhood. He was a member of Frostburg Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and of the Eckhart Baptist church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Helena (Brode) Close, at home; a son, Walter Close, Eckhart; a daughter, Mrs. John Kreiling, Cumberland; two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Eisel and Mrs. Jean Lemmert, and a brother, Alex Close, all of Frostburg. No arrangements have been made.

FROSTBURG — Mrs. Lena Close, 81, died in Cumberland this morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. John A. Kreiling, 516 Riehl Avenue. A native of Frostburg, she was the widow of James Close and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Brode. Mrs. Close had resided with her daughter for the last two years. Surviving, besides Mrs. Kreiling, are another daughter, Mrs. Walter C. Close, Frostburg; a brother, Philip Brode, Steubenville, Ohio; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The body is at the Hafer Funeral Home here where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. tomorrow. CLOSE, Miss Letty

FROSTBURG — Miss Letty Close, 46, of 234 East Main Street, died yesterday at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, after an illness of six months. She was a daughter of Mrs. Minnie (Brode) Close, with whom she resided, and the late Alexander Close. Miss Close was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ. She was an employe of District Court and had formerly been employed in the Trial Magistrate's office here. Besides her mother, surviving are two sisters, Mrs. William Richardson, Salisbury, Md. and Mrs. William Fuller, of here; and two brothers, Kenneth and William Close, both of here. The body is at the Hafer-Sowers Funeral Home here where friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted there tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. George L. Wehler officiating. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

CLOSE, Miss Margaret

FROSTBURG, Dec. 26 — Miss Margaret Close, 79, died yesterday morning at her residence, 236 East Main street, after a lingering illness. A daughter of the late James D. and Margaret (Dudley) Close, and a native of Eckhart, she had resided here for many years. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Eisel, Mrs. Henry Lemmert, and two brothers, James D., and Alexander Close, this city.

CLOSE, Robert

Eckhart, Md., Jan. 28 - Robert Close, former resident, died yesterday morning in Pittsburgh following a heart attack. A native of Eckhart, Mr. Close, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James R. Close, had resided in Pittsburgh for the past 20 years, where he was employed by the Mine Safety Appliance Company. He is survived by seven sisters, Mrs. Holly Jenkins and Mrs. Leslie A. Barnes, Sykesville, Md.; Miss Olive Close, Pasadena, Md.; the Misses Evelyn, Nellie, Diana and Jane Close, Eckhart; and two brothers, William Close, Cumberland, and Blair Close, Eckhart.
