WM. A. BUCHHOLTZ
From: A HISTORY OF ALLEGANY COUNTY ~ 1923 pg.880
WILLIAM A. BUCHHOLTZ, a self made man, has been in active business in Cumberland for forty years and more, and is a substantial representative of its industrial and commercial interests, having taken a prominent part in the promotion of both. During most of this time he has been manager of the Cumberland Brewing Company, which has prospered amazingly under his guidance, and he has had other responsibilities of importance to the development of the city, where he has solid standing based on his accomplishments in the course of a busy career. Mr. Buchholtz was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, April 15, 1848, son of William and Mary (Kreimes) Buchholtz, who came to live in Cumberland, Maryland, when he was but three years old. The father, who was a cabinetmaker, died in 1855, the mother surviving to the age of eighty-two years, dying in 1889. Of their three children, John is deceased; William A. is mentioned below; Mary Josephine is the widow of Henry Koelker, of Cumberland. William A. Buchholtz grew up in Cumberland, and received his education in the St. Patrick's Parochial School. He began regular work at the age of sixteen years as a clerk in the wholesome establishment of Clabaugh & Rhind, in Cumberland, where he continued for seven years. At the end of this period he went to Baltimore, where he remained about three years in the lumber, sash and door manufacturing business. Returning to Cumberland in 1876 he commenced the wholesale beer bottling business on his own account. He carried on this line until 1890, in which year he was one of the organizers of the Cumberland Brewing Company, the first concern of its kind in Western Maryland, in which his interests were chiefly centered. He was general manager from the beginning and the success of the business, largely attributable to his skillful direction of affairs, was sufficiently notable to place him among the foremost men of the city. He is also president of the Citizens Motor Car Co. and the United Accessories Co., of Cumberland, both of which he has handled with characteristic enterprise. On October 28, 1885, Mr. Buchholtz was married to Miss Elizabeth C. Maus, of Cumberland, daughter of Matthias and Mary A. (Zapf) Maus. They have a family of five children: Mary Josephine, living at home; William H., who married Miss Maud Rollins, and has two sons, William H., Jr., and John, and one daughter, Katherine; Lucina, Vincent A., graduate of the Bliss Electrical School of Tacoma, [Washington]D. C.; and Paul J. The family are Catholics, belonging to SS. Peter's and Paul's Parish in Cumberland. In politics Mr. Buchholtz holds to the principles of the Democratic party.
