KOELKER J[ohn?]Henry KOELKER  was born in 1837 in Hannover, Germany, to Henry (b.1811) and Mary E. (unknown) (b. 1805) KOELKER. [Note: data in the 1850 Census lists him as 'Henry', and in the 1860 Census he is listed as 'John H'. It seems Henry was the name he used most often.] The family emigrated about 1844 [according to J. Henry's obituary] where the elder Henry found work as a laborer, in Cumberland, MD., by 1850. A daughter, Mary Ann, was born in 1846, in Maryland.  J. Henry worked as a grocery clerk most of his life in Cumberland.  In the 1860 Census, Mary E. is listed as a widow, thus the elder Henry had died between 1850 and 1860. By the time of the 1870 Census, J. Henry had married Mary Josephine BUCHHOLTZ who was born in March, 1841 in Pennsylvania.     BUCHHOLTZ The Cumberland Times   "KOELKER 23 Mar 1888  Mr Henry Koelker died this morning from pneumonia, in his 51st year of age. He leaves a wife, the former Miss Buckholtz, [sic] and 4 children, the youngest is 7 years of age.  Mr Koelker came to this county at age 7 and found employment with Mr M Tearney and with the Messrs J & T Coolehan, prominent grocers.  The funeral is from the home at 32 Hanover Street with interment in the Sts Peter & Paul Cemetery" Their children were: Joseph Henry Sr., May 22, 1870 to October 31, 1944 . William B., 1875 to ? who married Charlotte unknown Henry Joseph, October, 1876 to ? married Clara A. Frank Edward, May 1881 to ? and married Ann RODGERS George M., April 1871 to July 6, 1871 (infant death).   Joseph Henry, Sr. married Mary Agnes ARNOLD of Cumberland.
