 HUBBARD, (infant) Linda

Mt. Savage, Jan. 18 — A woman and her baby granddaughter were killed and three other children were hospitalized as the result of an explosion and fire which demolished a house in nearby Slabtown early today. The blast—of unexplained origin—and the resulting flames leveled the two-story frame home of Mrs. Hannah McKenzie. Mrs. McKenzie and her one-year-old granddaughter, Linda Hubbard were killed. The injured were identified as Ronald McKenzie, a 14-year-old grandson of the dead woman, and Mrs. McKenzie's two daughters, Shirley, 14, and Connie, 12. They were taken to Miners' Hospital in Frostburg where doctors said they were not seriously hurt but were suffering mainly from shock. Connie was quoted as saying that she and the two teen-agers were awakened by the explosions as the house fell in. They climbed out a window to safety. Firemen and State Police who dug through the debris to locate the two bodies, said they were unable to determine the cause of the explosion. Slabtown is a Western Maryland community near the Pennsylvania line.
Hannah was born March 1, 1897. Married to James December 24, 1915, in Frostburg.

HUBBARD, T. H.

Engineer T. H. Hubbard, about 55 years old, was killed, and Fireman A. Myers was badly injured when a Western Maryland railway engine rolled over an embankment at Haddix, on the Elkins division, last night. This was the second fatal accident in this division in two days. Both men lived at Elkins and were taken there after the wreck, Hubbard to his home and Myers to the hospital. A report from Elkins today says the condition of Myers is not serious.  Singularly none of the cars followed the engine off the track. The train was westbound and was about 10 miles from Elkins when the engine jumped the track without warning or seeming cause. It chanced to leave the rails on the embankment and rolled, crushing engineer Hubbard to death.  About 30 miles east of the site of this fatal accident, Albert Robinette, a painter, of this city, lost his life Friday.

HUMBERSTON/HUMBERTSON, Mrs. Mary Jane Boyer

We are sorry to mention that death has visited our community and taken the beloved wife of Noah Humberston.  Mrs. Jane Humberston was born in 1835, and died Sept. 12, 1891, aged 56 years.  The interment took place on Sunday, Sept. 13, on the home farm.  The cause of her death was typhoid fever.  Mrs. Humberston lived a quiet life, devoting her time to the cares of her family.  She was always ready to lend a helping hand to those needing assistance.  She was the mother of thirteen children, four of whom are dead.  Those surviving her are married.  We can sympathize with the husband and children, for the mother's love is indeed the golden chord which binds youth to age. Charles Humbertson

HUMBERTSON, Charles

Lonaconing Bureau,
"Mr. Chas. Humbertson was killed by engine No. 19 about 1:30 a.m. yesteday on the C. & P. Railroad, near Pink  Row.  Acting Coroner C. S. Murphy summoned a jury of inquest, composed of the following gentlemen: Wm. B. Bradley, foreman; Lloyd Durst, Jas. B. McAlpine, Andrew Spier, Peter McFarland, Daniel J. Murphy, Patrick Mansfield,, John Heron, Wm. Relber, Wm. Travis, Jno. Smith, D. R. Sloan.  The jury viewed the remains and adjourned to meet in C. S. Murphy's office at 7 o'clock to hear the testimony of witnesses. Mr. Wm. Whitefield and J. N. Howard testified that they passed the point where the man was killed a short time after 1 o'clock a.m. and did not know that anything had happened until they reached the Georges Creek mine where they were informed that their engine had killed a man at Pink Row. Dr. J. O. Bullock examined the remains and found [the] body cut in two just above the hip bones.  Found no bruises, except a slight wound on the right arm and one on the scalp, neither of which would have caused death.  The doctor's testimony clears away any suspicion that Mr. Humbertson was dealt with in a foul way, and the body placed on the track to hide the crime. Mr. David Creighton testified that he was with Mr. Humbertson from 7 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. and separated from him at Love's corner, and that while Mr. Humbertson had several drinks of beer while in his company, he was in a condition to take care of himself; that he had no quarrel with any one; that he had no enemies, so far as he knew, who would molest or waylay him. Lawson Creighton testified in a similar way, and corroborated the testimony of the former witness. John Rankin testified that he was with Mr. Humbertson from 8 p.m. to about 12:30 a.m. and separated from him at Central School, when Mr. Humbertson crossed the bridge, at that point on his way home; that Mr. Humbertson was able to take care of himself; that they parted in friendship and that no enemity[sic] existed against Mr. Humbertson, so far as he knew.  Jno. Rankin corroborated the testimony of his brother. Bailiff Thos. Allerdice was talking to the deceased on Main street about 12:30 a.m. and advised him to go home; but he was not drunk, but was able to take care of himself. D. A. Edward, agent for the C. & P., testified that the night operator reported the train that killed Mr. Humbertson as extra east No. 19, at Lonaconing at 1:24 a.m. The verdict of the jury was that Mr. Humbertson came to his death by engine No. 19, of the C. & P. R. R., at Pink Row crossing, and
that it was an unavoidable accident, and exonerated the company from all blame."

HUMBERTSON, Mrs. Mary Jane/Jone Boyer

We are sorry to mention that death has visited our community and taken the beloved wife of Noah Humbertston. Mrs. Jone[??] Humbertson was born in 1835, and died Sept. 12, 1891, aged 56 years. The interment took place on Sunday, Sept. 13, on the home farm. The cause of her death was typhoid fever. Mrs. Humbertson lived a quiet life, devoting her time to the cares of her family. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to those needing assistance. She was the mother of thirteen children, four of whom are dead. Those surviving her are married. We can sympathinze with the husband and children, for the mother's love is indeed the golden chord which binds youth to age.     ~M.

HUMBERTSON, Melvin Woodrow & Virginia

EXPLOSION WRECKS CUMBERLAND HOME ~ Two Children of William Humbertson Killed by Collapse of Front Wall
Special Dispatch to The American
Cumberland, Md, October 20 - Virginia, 12 years old, and Melvin Woodrow, 2 years, children of William and Ellen Humbertson, were killed this afternoon by the collapse of the front walls of their home on North Centre street, near the Cumberland Electric Railway car barn, from an explosion of gas. The father, who is one-legged, says he had opened a closet door to procure a pair of pincers when the fumes shot out and ignited from the coal stove.  The girl was holding her little brother in her arms at the front window. The children had been ill and had only recently left their beds.  Humbertson was badly burned about the face, hands and body.  He was given attention at the Western Maryland Hospital.  An infant, two months old, in a baby buggy in the room was uninjured.  Three children with their mother in the kitchen escaped, while two other children were out.  The family consisted of eight children. The explosion wrecked the front of the house and blew furniture out into the street.  The interior was rent? and what furniture remeained insie was badly broken.  Windows in many houses in the neighborhood were broken.  The noise from the explosion was heard over a greater portion of the city.  Humbertson, who is a night watchman for the Westinghouse Church Kerr Company, contractors, erecting the Baltimore and Ohio engine building plant here, says he had detected the odor of escaping gas for several weeks and had notified the landlord.  He declares that escaping gas in the rear of the premises had caught fire a few days ago.  Gas pipes run along with a sewer under the house, it is said. Members of the family said that they were hardly able to sleep because of the odor. While bricks were still falling, Francis J. Drum, Washington, who is home on a visit, and his brother, James L. Drum, rushed in and recovered the mangled bodies of the children.

HUMBERTSON, Thomas

WORLD'S OLDEST BANK VICE PRESIDENT DEAD ~ Uncle Tommy Humbertson Dies At Frostburg; Lived Nearly A Century In Allegany
Cumberland Md., Feb. 25 -
Thomas Humbertson, who was born in June, 1819, died last night in Frostburg.  He was vice-president and director of the Citizen's National Bank.  He attended the meetings regularly, almost up to the time of his death and is said to have been the oldest bank official in the world.

Born In Log Cabin
He was born in a log cabin built in 1754, in a wilderness where Woodland, this county, now stands.  He was a carpenter and later engaged in the manufacture of firebrick at Frostburg with L. M. Gorsuch of Westminster.  He was the main supporter of the First Methodist Episcopal church of which he was a member 81 years and a class leader for 75 years. In his boyhood days he walked to church through primitive forests infested with wild animals.  His grandparents were driven from this country to the Eastern Shore of Maryland by Indian raids.  But they returned later.  He remembered well experiences as related by his grandparents going back nearly 200 years.
Drank Brandy in Younger Days.
He never indulged in intoxicants except for apple brandy in his younger days and had not used tobacco for 41 years. He attributed his longevity to early rising and to the fact that he took care of himself on account of not having been robust in his boyhood.  He was a great exponent of the simple life.  He was twice married and survived both wives.  His niece, Mrs. Martha Roberts, kept house for him.  His mentality was undimmed to the last.

HUMMEL, Mrs. Katharine Keidel

The Meyersdale community was saddened this week by the death of Mrs. Katharine Hummel, wife of James B. Hummel, well known grocery merchant of Meyersdale, for Mrs. Hummel had a wide circle of friends and relatives among whom she served with quiet devotion as she did also in the various organizations to which she belonged.  She passed away at 3:05 Saturday morning, April 5, 1941, in the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, where she underwent an operation for gall stones on March 26.  Although her condition was serious from the beginning, she did show improvement on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, but early Friday there was a turn for the worse, and nothing that could be done by the best of doctors or nurses could save her life. Mrs. Hummel was born in Germany February 16, 1878, coming to America when three years of age with her parents, William and Anna (Struider) Keidel, who took up their residence in this community.  She is survived by her husband, James B. Hummel, and one sister, Mrs. Glenn Crowe. Her body rested in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Crowe on Olinger Street, which was originally the Keidel home in which she spent her girlhood, from Saturday evening until Tuesday afternoon when it was taken to the Amity Reformed Church where funeral services were conducted. Members of Amity Church Missionary Society, of which she was an active and devoted member, serving many years as an officer and to her death as treasurer, were honorary pallbearers.  Six members of the American Legion of which her husband is an active member, served as pallbearers.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and of the Meyersdale Garden Club, which organizations were also represented at her funeral.  There were very many beautiful floral tributes. Interment was made in Union Cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price and son, morticians. Among those most grieved by her loss are her nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Crowe, and her niece, Elizabeth Crowe Werner and her husband, Paul Werner, all of whom have had business opportunities made for them by their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Hummel, in the merchantile firms known as the Meyersdale Unit Store and Community Market.
