LAFFERTY,  Robert Frederick

Robert Frederick Lafferty, 34, of Cresaptown, father of four children, took his own life shortly after noon yesterday when he drank two ounces of Lysol. Lafferty, employed in the filtration department, Celanese plant, was alone when he drank the poison, and was found slumped on the floor by his son, Earl, 12, about 12:30 p. m. The boy had come home from school to get a written excuse so he could go to the dentist. Earl, riding his bicycle, hurried to the home of his grandmother and then of his uncle, both about two miles away. His uncle, Joseph Winters, a Celanese foreman, tried to give the dying man milk as an antidote, but his mouth and throat were too badly burned for the milk to save him. Lafferty died enroute to the Allegany Hospital, where he arrived at 2 p. m. Dr. Linne H. Corson, deputy medical examiner, returned a verdict of suicide, blaming despondency following heavy drinking. Mrs. Edna Lafferty, 31, wife of the dead man, told State Trooper B. O. Mason that she last saw her husband when he came home drunk at 7 a.m. He had drawn his pay Thursday and Friday was his day off. Mrs. Lafferty was in Cumberland at the time of the tragedy. Mrs. Lafferty said her husband had threatened to kill himself many times while drunk. She said he was in good health, but had been drinking heavily for several years. Mr. Lafferty was born at Allegany Grove, the son of Jacob and Clara Finley Lafferty. Surviving, besides his wife and parents, are four children, Earl, Glenn, Donald and Roberta; a brother, Vernon, Allegany Grove; and two sisters, Mrs. Edward J. Naughton, Cumberland, and Miss Emma Jane Lafferty, Allegany Grove.
