TAYLOR, Clara Lee

(child) Never, perhaps, has our community received a more sudden shock of grief than that which was occasioned by the unexpected death of Clara Lee, daughter of Mr and Mrs D P Taylor, of Medley, who, after a short and very painful illness of diphtheria, departed this life November 21, 1911, aged 8 years, 8 months and 3 days. Clara Lee was one of the brightest and most promising little girls of this community. She always wore a smiling face and her bright and cheery disposition won her many friends. She will be missed, but lightly expresses the sentiment of those who knew her as a daughter, sister, pupil, school-mate or friend. Clara Lee's funeral was preached Sunday, December 10, in the Medley M E Church, by Rev. Landstreet from the words of our Savior found in Matt. 10:14: "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven." Keyser Tribune, December 22, 1911

TAYLOR, Dr. K.

One of Hampshire's oldest and most widely known physicians and one of her prominent citizens passed away when Dr. K. Taylor died at his home, at Slanesville, Thursday night of last week. Dr. Taylor came to this county from Loudoun county, Virginia, during the first decade following the Civil War. Shortly afterward he married a Miss Rannells who, with four sons and two daughters, survives him. He had a very large practice and was regarded as a most successful and skillful physician. Dr. Taylor was a soldier in the Confederate Army, was a member of Pickett's division, and was in that General's famous charge at Gettysburg. He was knocked down by a minie ball near the stone fence, almost at the " high water" mark of the Confederacy and carried the print of the ball on the side of his head to the day of his death. Last summer he attended the great Reunion on the Gettysburg field and in company with friends from this county re-visited and identified the spot where he fell fifty years before. The funeral occurred Sunday and the interment was at Salem Church.

TRESSLER, Mrs. Catherine Bird

An aged Meyersdale resident died in Meyersdale Community Hospital last Thursday, two days after she was involved in an automobile accident just south of Meyersdale. Mrs. Catherine Tressler, 77, wife of Joseph L. Tressler, Beachley Street, succumbed to a coronary occlusion in the local hospital. Coroner Robert H. Halverson, who investigated, said that the accident in which she was involved was secondary, and therefore an inquest will probably be unnecessary. The accident in which Mrs. Tressler was involved occurred on Tuesday afternoon, July 14, on Route 219, about one-half mile south of Meyersdale. Mr. Tressler, who was driving the family car, was making a left hand turn from Route 219 to the Ralph Laughery Body Shop, where he was taking his car for repairs. As Tressler turned from 219, he was involved in a collision with a car driven by Robert Crissey, 27, also of Meyersdale, who was traveling in the opposite direction. Both Mr. and Mrs. Tressler were removed to Meyersdale Community Hospital. Mrs. Tressler suffered lacerations to the scalp, crushed ribs, and was in extreme shock. Her death, however, was caused by a heart attack. Mr. Tressler was also injured in the accident and remains a patient at the hospital. He suffered a fractured leg and knee and lacerations to the scalp. He is said to be in improved condition. Mr. Tressler served a number of years on the Meyersdale borough council. Mrs. Catherine Bird Tressler was born on August 20, 1880, in Summit Township, a daughter of the late Orville and Hulda (Shultz) Bird. Surviving are her husband, mentioned previously, and two children, Mrs. Roland Maust, Crafton, Ohio; the Rev. J. Ward Tressler, Lansing, Mich.; one sister, Mrs. Maude Suder, Meyersdale RD 2, and four grandchildren. She was a member of the Meyersdale Brethren Church. Friends were received at the Konhaus Funeral Home, Meyersdale, where services were conducted Sunday, the Rev. Ralph C. Hall, pastor of Meyersdale Brethren Church, officiated. TRICKETT, Carl (also Davis, Martha)

Looking Back 1935: Blast kills Oakland farmer, housekeeper ~ James Rada Jr., Columnist Carl Trickett, a 38-year-old electrician, left his work at the Shallmar Powerhouse around 3 a.m. on a cold Saturday morning in January 1935. He drove to his home, a dairy farm two miles west of Oakland, and caught some needed shut-eye.The car remained outside his house until he, two of his four children and his housekeeper got into the car on Sunday to drive to Morgantown, W.Va., where Trickett’s brother lived. They never arrived. Two miles from Terra Alta within sight of the Hopemont Sanitarium, the car exploded. “Small trees and bushes were cut off and mowed down for a distance of 75 feet from the highway by flying particles of the front end of the machine,” the Charlestown Daily Mail reported. Trickett was “killed by small bits of the motor as the explosion rocked the entire neighborhood,” according to the newspaper. William and Margaret Trickett, ages 12 and 13, were thrown from the car, as was Martha Davis the housekeeper. Davis was killed immediately, but the children survived, battered and bloody. “A Hopemont worker, first to reach the scene, said the badly bleeding children were attempting to extricate their father from the overturned car, which caught fire,” according to the Charleston Daily Mail . The worker helped get Trickett’s body out of the wreckage and took him to the hospital where he died shortly after arriving. It quickly became apparent that the explosion hadn’t been an accident. Theories began to make the rounds as to what had happened, from kerosene replacing the antifreeze in the radiator to dynamite being placed in the car. The latter proved to be true. “State’s Attorney Neil C. Fraley said he believed the dynamite had been placed on Trickett’s motor and exploded when the heat became intense enough to set it off,” the Baltimore Sun reported. Law officers from both West Virginia and Maryland began investigating the explosion. Though the explosion had happened in West Virginia, Garrett County Sheriff Clarence Spears investigated because no one knew where or when the explosives might have been planted in the car. The Cumberland Evening Times reported that two days after the explosion on Jan. 8 Wallace and Thomas Davis of Shallmar, Martha Davis’ husband and son, were arrested. It wasn’t for Martha’s murder, though. Wallace had signed his brother-in-law’s name to a promissory note to pay for his wife’s funeral. Trickett was buried in Oakland on Jan. 9 and Davis’ funeral was in Shallmar on the following day. The Davis men were allowed to attend the funeral, but they had to be accompanied by a deputy. They were returned to the jail following the service, not only because of the fraud and forgery, but the newspaper reported that by then they had become suspects in the explosion. No reason was given for why the Wallaces had become suspects, though the sheriff traveled to Shallmar as part of his investigation. “The trip was made in an effort to check on the theory an enemy of Trickett had hidden dynamite in his automobile while he was working in a power plant there,” according to the Cumberla nd Evening Times . Though no resolution to the case can be found, one plausible theory is that Trickett and Davis met while Trickett was doing his work at the Shallmar power plant. Did they have an affair that Wallace found out about and took extreme action to end? No answer is known and no one was ever brought to trial for the murder.

TROUTMAN, Mrs. Ann

Tuesday morning as the passenger train northward bound was approaching Hopewell it struck and killed Mrs. Ann Troutman, widow of the late Jacob Troutman. She had spent the night at Langdondale and was returning to her home at Hopewell when the accident occurred. She had just stepped onto the railroad, which has a footpath at that point, near the Simon Foundry, when the engine struck her. The woman was hard of hearing, which was a factor in her being struck. The road has a sharp curve at that point and it was impossible for the engineer or the fireman to see her in time. She was killed almost instantly, breathing but a couple times after being struck. The only mark, on her was a contusion on her head. She was aged about 70 years and is survived by three sons and two daughters.
