JOHNSON, Benedict A.

Funeral of B. A. Johnson.
The funeral of Mr. Benedict A. Johnson, who died suddenly at his home on Thomas street Sunday night, as briefly noted in yesterday's Times, will take place Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.  Mr. Johnson was 59 years old. He was born at Ellicott City, Md and came to Cumberland in the early seventies to work in the B. & 0. rolling mill. Later he took employment on the railroad as a brakeman and has followed that occupation about 27 years. For a number of years, he had been engaged attending to the switching of cars on the hump at Oldltown road and despite his 59 years was as active in getting over cars as the youngest brakeman.  Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, who was Miss Louise Dummel and nine children: Mary, Thomas, John, Agnes, Charles, Adelaide, Louise and Virginia Johnson, all residing at home, and Mrs. Annie Neuse, who lives on North Centre street. Mr. Johnson also leaves one brother in Salt Lake City, Utah, and two sisters, Mrs. Jno. T. Griffin and Mrs. Mary Bruce, of this city.  Mr. Johnson's death was sudden and was a great shock to his friends here and elsewhere. He had filled the position of yard brakeman in the yards of the B. & 0. for a number of years and was very popular. He had been in the best of health apparently and after a day's work in the B. & 0. yards ate a bountiful supper and spent the evening with his family. Shortly before 11 o'clock he was "seized with a slight attack of coughing followed by a violent hemorrhage from which death resulted in less than ten minutes and before a physician could reach him. It is probable that Mr. Johnson's sudden death resulted from an internal injury which lingered with him for the past two months or since the time he was "caught and rolled" between two freight cars on the hump in the B. & O. yards near Oldtown road. He suffered much pain from the hurt at the time and many experienced railroad men who knew the circumstances of the accident marvelled at the fact that the injuries were not immediately fatal.

JOHNSON, Prof. H. H.

Prof. H. H. Johnson, who was stricken with paralysis more than a week ago, died Saturday afternoon. He had steadily been losing ground from the time he was stricken and his death was not [un]expected. In the death of Prof Johnson, Romney loses one of its best known citizens, a man who had not merely a state-wide, but a national reputation. Born in Pendleton Co, this state, in 1845, he received his early education in the Va. School for the Deaf and Blind at Staunton, and afterwards took an M A degree at a Va. college. Always enthusiastically interested in the welfare of those who, like himself, afflicted with loss of sight, he early began to attract public attention to their needs in the young state of W. Va.; and it was he who drew the bill establishing the Schools for The Deaf and Blind here in Romney, where he rendered faithful service as a teacher from the founding of the school to within a week of the day of his death, a period of forty-three years. He was also largely instrumental in getting passed through Congress a bill for the free transmission through the mails of literature for the blind. He was an active member of the American Assn. of Instructors of the Blind, and has attended most of the meetings of that body, frequently serving on its most important committees. Indeed his life is a splendid example for those afflicted like himself, in showing that the loss of sight is no insurmountable bar to a useful and inspiring life. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. In early life he married Miss Barbee, of Pendleton Co., who died leaving three children, William Terrill, Guy and Miss Leila Burns. He after married Miss Elizabeth Neil, of this locality, who with a son, George, and daughter, Miss Lucy N., survive him. Mr. Johnson’s death will be mourned and regretted by a circle of friends and acquaintances which will include persons in nearly every state in the Union. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Brooke. Interment in Indian Mound Cemetery.
