LICHTY, Samuel

Samuel Lichty was born in Fayette county, Pa., Jan 1, 1811. He removed to Maryland in early life where he was married in October 1841. After a residence in that state of 20 years, he returned to Pennsylvania, where he remained only two years, when he removed to Illinois. He was a resident of that state not more than 2 years. He with his family came to Missouri in October 1869. Thus it appears that he was a citizen of Kirksville for nearly 22 years. Mr. Lichty was a hard worker, a man of wonderful endurance and remarkable health. During all his long life he never had a serious illness until his last sickness which confined him to the house for nearly a year, and to his bed for four months. He became a member of the Lutheran church about 30 years ago, and transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church of Kirksville about 13 years ago, of which church he remained a consistent and faithful member until the close of his life. Though quite deaf, so that he could hear very little of the services of the church, yet he was regular in his attendance upon the church worship. He very much enjoyed church music and the reading of his Bible in his home. He was a good husband, a kind father, a quiet and peacable citizen. He died on the morning of July 9, 1892, aged 80 years, 6 months and 8 days. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at 10 a.m., July 10.

LILLER, Edward T.

Edward T. Liller, son of the deceased James Liller, of Ridgeville, W. Va., departed his life October 18, 1913, at 7 o'clock a.m. at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. H. Ellifritz, aged 23 years 4 months and 28 days. He was a member of a family of 13 children, of which three brothers, two sisters and his father have gone to that world beyond, and he has gone to meet them on the golden shore. He has been in ill health for the past year, and nothing seemed to check the disease. He had been married three years. We will meet him no more in this world but hope someday to meet him on that golden shore, to clasp glad hands where parting will be o'er. Those left to mourn the loss of a loved one are as follows: a wife and mother and four brothers and three sisters, Crowder S, Tom, Wade and Guy, Mrs. John Main, Mrs. J. H. Ellifritz and Mrs. R. V. LILLER, Jacob

Mr. Jacob Liller is dead. Mr. Liller was born near Ridgeville, Hampshire Co, Va, as it was then in the year of 1843. He lived all his life in that and the vicinity of Keyser, well known and respected by all who became acquainted with him Mr. Liller has been a lifelong Republican, and while in health took some part in politics, always kept himself well posted, knew something of the wire working and rascality generally used among politicians. He could advance some excellent advice along that line to those who were honest enough at heart to receive it. He has been very much afflicted for years but worked whenever able to go. It can and is said of him that Uncle Jake Liller was one of the most industrious, honest, upright men I ever knew. The community and many friends will and do miss Uncle Jake.

LINDELL, Jesse

The funeral of  Jesse Lindell, who was killed in a collision between a B. & O. locomotive and the South Cumberland auto bus, took place at 2 o'clock this afternoon from his home. Services were conducted by Rev. M.B. McLaughlin and burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery. Young Lindell was killed at the Harrison street crossing of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad Saturday night at 11 o'clock when an engine on the B. & O. crashed into the South Cumberland auto bus, totally demolishing it and instantly killing Jesse Lindell, aged 14 years, son of Charles T. Lindell, of 141 Humbird street.
Sixteen other passengers on the bus were more or less injured. The injured are: V. Campbell, age 19 years, residence 501 Springdale street, Cumberland, scratched about knee in four places and bruise on back of head; Thomas Whalley, age 17 years, residence 13 South Cedar street, Cumberland, cut about little finger, left hand; M. Campbell, residence, 501 Springdale street, Cumberland, age 16 years, contused knee; Rodger Eackles, residence South Cumberland, scratched about face; Mrs. A. B. Cox, Cumberland, shock from general shaking up; F. Villing, 104 Walnut street, Cumberland, slightly bruised; Miss Regine Houck, South Cumberland, shock; Mrs. J. A. Ault, 1320 Virginia avenue, South Cumberland, shock and lightly bruised; James Ault, son of Mrs. Ault, slight bruise; Mrs. W. S. Cross, 1520 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, shock; Miss Rebecca Gross, 1320 Virginia avenue, fingers bruised; Mrs. A. Swarner, No. 3 Browning street, general bruises; Miss Hazel and Albert, children of Mrs. Swarner, bruised; Mrs. C. B. Sweitzer, 13 Oldtown road, shock; Miss Emma Evans, Cumberland, not injured.
Young Lindell, it is said, endeavored to jump from the bus when he realized the danger, but the crash came so quick that he was prevented doing so and the impact was so great that he was thrown out of the door of the bus against a box car standing at the side of the crossing. In the fall he sustained a compound fracture of the skull, lacerated ear, a concussion of the right shoulder, his right arm was broken at several places, and his chest was crushed. The Butler ambulance was summoned and it was with a great deal of difficulty and not until the wrecked auto bus was jacked up on one side that the body of the unfortunate young lad was extricated from beneath the wheels and freight car. The body was removed to the Butler morgue and prepared for burial. It was later removed to the Stein funeral parlor and then to the home in South Cumberland. The engine, No. 2154, that struck the auto, had arrived but a few minutes before with passenger train No 12, and was running down the east freight track to the shops. Box cars on both sides of the crossing hid the approaching engine and the operator of the bus, W.V. Gulbronson, did not see his danger until the front of the engine was near the crossing. The engineer applied his emergency brakes but without result as the bus was pushed down the tracks fully twelve feet and crushed into splinters before the engine was brought to a stop. It is a miracle that every passenger in the bus was not killed. Coroner William E. Shaw held an inquest Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Stein morgue and rendered the following verdict:
"We, the jury, find that Jesse Lindell came to his death by being crushed while riding on the South Cumberland bus, said bus being hit by Baltimore and Ohio engine No.2154, at Harrison street, on the night of September 5th, it being the opinion of the jury that the death of Jesse Lindell could have been avoided had a watchman been placed at this crossing."
