By the time of the 1870 Census, J. Henry KOELKER had married Mary Josephine BUCHHOLTZ who was born in March, 1841 in Pennsylvania.
Her parents, William BUCHHOLTZ (b.1800, died 1855), and Mary (KREIMES) MESSMAN [apparently widowed] (b.1807, d. 7 Feb. 1889) were born in Germany.
William BUCHHOLTZ is found immigrating to the Port of New York aboard the "Brig Pacholas" from Bremen on 21 July 1836, indicating his place of origin as Drakenburg, Germany. This certainly fits the period he would have emigrated, but it has not been confirmed.
The family was enumerated in Southampton, Somerset Co. PA in 1850. William BUCHHOLTZ was a cabinetmaker.
The Cumberland Times
"BUCKHOLTZ 07 Feb 1889 Mrs Mary C Buckholtz of Martinsburg, died at age 82 years. She leaves 3 sons and 1 daughter: William Buckholtz, Mrs Harry [SIC] Koelker, and Frances M Messman of this city; and John Buckholtz of Washington DC. The funeral is at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Rev Father Benedict officiating." [The name has been misspelled with a "k" rather than with "hh"]
There was an older son, Francis M. MESSMAN, [from Mary's previous marriage] who was born in Germany, in 1831, John BUCHHOLTZ born in 1838/9, in PA., and a younger brother, William Augustum BUCHHOLTZ, born 15 April,1848, also in PA..
John was living in Washington, D.C., at the time of his mother's death. Nothing more is known about him. The census indicates that he was a carpenter
William married and raised his family in the Cumberland area. He formed, and remained General Manager of Cumberland Brewing Co., the makers of "Old Export Beer" until his death. The Cumberland Brewing Co. continued to operate and was later taken over by the Queen City Brewing Co.
Francis married Mary HODEL, the daughter of Nicholas and Ann (unknown) HODEL. Nicholas was born in Oldsberg, Basel, Switzerland in 1794. He owned and operated a brewery from 1857 till 1861, when he died. His son, John G. HODEL, took over the operation of the brewery until his death in 1882, and the brewery was closed.
Francis and Mary had a son, Joseph MESSMAN. Apparently Mary HODEL died in childbirth. Francis sent Joseph to live with his mother, the elder Mary, until her death. Joseph received $600 plus accrued interest from his grandfather, Nicholas HODEL, when he turned twenty-one.
Francis married a second time, to Mary Elizabeth DOERNER. Little is known about Francis from after 1860, however, he worked as a carpenter and was living in Cumberland with his second family at the time of his mother's death in 1889.
Joseph is found living with his grandmother from the time he was 3 years old, in the 1860 Census,
along with John, (Mary) Josephine and William Augustum BUCHHHOLTZ.
In 1870, Mary BUCHHOLTZ, her son, William Augustum BUCHHOLTZ and grandson, Joseph MESSMAN are living with (son-in-law) J. Henry and Mary Josephine KOELKER.
In the 1880 census, Mary is living with Joseph and his new wife, Kate (ROSENBERGER) in Martinsburg, WV. Joseph was now an Engraver and later became a jeweler.
J. Henry KOELKER died 23 March, 1888 in Cumberland, MD. and Mary Josephine (BUCHHHOLTZ) KOELKER died June 29, 1927, also in Cumberland.
